Portsmouth is a vibrant coastal city in the United Kingdom, full of stunning outdoor photography opportunities. As a photographer who just so happens to be a local resident, I must say this picturesque city offers a variety of breathtaking backdrops, from tranquil beaches to lively urban environments and historic landmarks. Each setting provides unique chances to capture an aesthetic that transforms my photos, particularly during those magical moments of sunrise and sunset.
Portsmouth's Beach
Beaches are one of the first location that comes to mind when thinking about outdoor photography. Portsmouth's stony beach stretches for 3.5km, offering stunning views of arriving ships, as well as the Isle of white which sits just opposite.
During the golden evening hours, soft sunlight becomes level with the horizon, setting the stage for magnificent backlight. Nothing can go wrong with a sunset photoshoot that encapsulates the sun dipping below the horizon, creating a canvas of vibrant oranges and pinks mixed with cool blues, reflected on the water. This location is perfect for personal portraits which is why I highly recommend this to customers of my services.
The beach is also great for more than just sunset shots. The texture of the clouds can lend moodiness to your photos, adding depth. Whether aiming for candid shots of friends enjoying the waves or artistic compositions of shells on the sand, Portsmouth's beach offers many possibilities for your shoot. For instance, on busy days, you can utilise the mayhem, having your children create playful scenes of building sandcastles in the bustling surroundings. Whereas, quieter moments later in the day could highlight a more romantic element.
Historic Landmarks of Portsmouth
Portsmouth is rich in history, and its historic dockyard offers an exclusive look into the past of sea travel. Iconic sites such as this and the infamous Spinnaker Tower serve as fantastic photo opportunities.
The Spinnaker Tower stands at 170 meters and serves as an emblem of the city. It is a must have landmark in your background if you wish to invoke a sense of location to your photoshoot, especially with the sparkling marina waters in the foreground. The mix of modern architecture and city significance adds a unique touch to every shot.

The Historic Dockyard, home to HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose, offers outstanding opportunities to capture a maritime vibe. The rugged textures of the ships against the rich brickwork create a contrast that enhances your portrait and narrative scenes. Capturing a ship’s silhouette as it is bathed in the warm glow of sunset can create a striking image that speaks to the city’s nautical heritage.
Urban Environment: Life in the City
Portsmouth's urban environment is alive with energy, making it a go to location for street photography. Areas like Gunwharf Quays and North End define the heart and soul of Portsmouth’s culture.
There are simply ample opportunities to capture candid moments of daily life set against backdrops of both contemporary buildings and historical architecture.

The interesting contrast of old and new creates compelling scenes that resonate with the city’s character. When photographing in these vibrant urban settings, I always like to recreate everyday interactions between people, like a street musician performing as a passing stranger tosses a coin, or a couple enjoying a meal outside a local café.
Natural Aesthetics: New Forest, Sunflower Gardens
If you want a tranquillity and natural edge to your portrait, you are not in any no have, the New forest is just a short drive from Portsmouth, this captivating landscape offers that lush greenery that textures your photoshoot. Wildlife, and occasional animal encounters within your photos are never off the charts. Trees can offer a play of light when the sun shines confidently enough, this light can create an almost heavenly atmosphere to your surroundings, with pores of shadows and highlights creating interesting scenes.

Your own outdoor photoshoot starts here:
If you have a passion for flowers, the Sunflower Gardens are open during their blooming season. The sunflowers, stretching towards the blue sky, create a complementary dance of colour that can elicit stunning outcomes. This spot is perfect for group portraits or countryside aesthetics that thrive on nature’s beauty.
