About my Art - Kian Storey

Updated: Aug 15

When starting out in photography I quickly noticed I had a taste for 'quirkiness' in my images. My arrogant desire to be different from others led me towards longing for work with unique statements or a redirection of stereotypes. This was the dopamine hit that led me into my passion, the reaction on people's faces, the emotion that conveyed from my idea to their eyes.

Making the leap into selling my work was a greater jump than anticipated. The hardest part was keeping alive that desire for difference that I had so successfully thrived on. Initially, I scrambled to simplify my work. I started taking pictures of what I thought everyone would like..."what sells?" I asked myself, "pictures of ducks and sunny seaside docks?" "perhaps a spot of flower photography". Whilst there are many photographers who find great success in these niche's, It wasn't me. And the price of this was boredom and frustration. I longed to be back in my early days, when I dared to explore the limits of my creative abilities, no cash minded ideas in sight...

The key to a successful endeavour, I have found, Is doing what you can endure. What you can maintain interest in and integrate into your life. My Images are only ever what I want, what I am good at, what makes statements and carries ideas. That is my style, nothing else.

On my blog I breakdown some of my early images into more detail, What were my ideas, the reasons behind them and how I pulled them off...
